Terms of Use

Effective 3 October 2026. You bring the server and the agent accounts, Maude runs agents there for you, and you stay in charge of what they're allowed to do.

Quick answer

Maude installs a daemon on servers you control and runs AI coding agents there under your own accounts with their providers. Agents can run commands and change or delete files, so you're responsible for what you approve and the permission mode you choose. Subscriptions are billed and auto-renewed by Apple or Google; cancel any time in your store account.

These terms are the agreement between you and Pilot Dev (Lucas Bastien, France), the publisher of Maude. They cover the Maude app, the Maude daemon it installs on your servers, the Maude relay and the website at maude.pilotdev.fr. By installing or using Maude you accept them. If you don't, please don't use Maude.

How we handle personal data is explained separately in our Privacy Policy.

What Maude is

Maude lets you run AI coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Grok Build and Antigravity) on servers you control, and drive them from your phone. It has three parts:

  • The app, which connects to your servers over SSH or through the relay.
  • The daemon, a program the app installs in ~/.maude on each server you connect. It installs the agents you pick, runs your sessions, keeps their history, and updates itself and the agents to versions we've tested.
  • The relay, an optional service we run that carries end-to-end encrypted traffic between your devices and your servers, and delivers notifications.

Maude is not a hosting provider and not an AI provider. You bring the server and the agent accounts. We don't host, operate or control your servers or the agents' models.

Who can use Maude

You must be at least 16 years old, and old enough to enter a binding contract where you live to buy a subscription. If you use Maude for an organisation, you confirm you're allowed to accept these terms for it.

Maude doesn't ask for an email or password. Your devices get an anonymous identity on the relay instead. Any device you link can reach every server you've connected through the relay, with the same power you have, so keep your phone locked and remove devices you no longer use (Settings → Relay & devices).

Your servers and what agents do on them

This is the part that matters most. AI agents run commands, install software, and create, change and delete files on your server, with whatever access the server user has. They make mistakes, can misread instructions, and can be manipulated by content they read (for example a malicious file or web page, known as prompt injection). Maude carries out what you and your agents ask; it can't make an agent's actions safe.

You are responsible for:

  • Your servers: that you own them or are allowed to use them this way, their security, their costs, and their compliance with your hosting provider's terms.
  • What you approve. When an agent asks permission, read the request before you tap Allow, whether in the app or from a notification. A one-line notification doesn't show everything a command will do.
  • The permission mode you choose. Modes like accept-edits and auto let agents act with fewer or no prompts. Yolo mode (called bypass permissions or full access by the vendors) lets an agent do anything the server user can, with no approval at all. Use it only on a server or container you could wipe and rebuild, with no production data, credentials or access to systems you can't afford to lose. Agent vendors give the same advice.
  • Backups. Keep backups and use version control. Don't give agents access to anything you couldn't restore.
  • The terminal, file and git features, which give you, and anyone holding a linked device, direct access to the server. You can limit what's reachable through the relay in ~/.maude/policy.json on the server.

Agents decide on their own what to do with your instructions. To the extent the law allows, we're not responsible for actions an agent takes on your server, or for the content or code an agent produces, including when you approved the action or chose a mode that didn't ask you.

Agents and other third-party services

Each agent is a third-party product. To use one you need your own account or API key with its provider, which bills you directly. Your use of each agent is governed by that provider's terms and usage policies, including any limits on how its subscriptions may be used:

We don't control these services. They can change, limit or stop working with Maude at any time, and a new version of an agent can break features until we update Maude. We test each agent version before the daemon installs it, but we can't promise that every agent, model or feature will keep working.

Software Maude installs on your server

By connecting a server, you allow Maude to install the daemon and the agents you choose on it, in the home directory of the user you logged in as, and to set it to start at boot when you turn that on (or when it replaces an earlier Maude daemon that already did). You also allow the daemon to:

  • check our update channel every 6 hours and install agent versions we've tested;
  • replace itself with a newer daemon build we publish, after checking the download's SHA-256 hash and that it runs;
  • download agents and its runtime from their vendors.

You can stop update checks with MAUDE_CHANNEL=off or only self-updates with MAUDE_SELF_UPDATE=off in the daemon's environment. A daemon that never updates may stop working with newer versions of the app or the agents. To remove everything, run ~/.maude/bin/maude uninstall-service and delete ~/.maude.

Subscriptions

  • A subscription is required to use Maude. The price, billing period and any free trial are shown in the app before you buy, in your local currency, as set through Apple or Google.
  • Free trials. If a trial is offered and you don't cancel at least 24 hours before it ends, it converts to a paid subscription and you're charged. Trials are limited to one per person, as the store enforces.
  • Auto-renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period, at the then-current price, until you cancel. You're charged within the 24 hours before the period ends.
  • Cancelling. Cancel any time in your App Store or Google Play account settings (in the app: Settings → Account & subscription → Manage subscription). You keep access until the end of the period you've paid for. Deleting the app doesn't cancel the subscription.
  • Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their policies. We can't issue refunds for store purchases ourselves.
  • Price changes follow the store's rules, which include notifying you in advance and, where required, asking for your consent.
  • Your rights as a consumer, including any right of withdrawal the store gives you, aren't affected.

A subscription pays for the Maude app, daemon and relay. It doesn't include server hosting or any agent's usage, which you pay to those providers.

If you got Maude from the App Store

If you downloaded Maude from Apple's App Store, Apple's Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies to your use of the app. Where it conflicts with these terms, these terms apply to the extent the Apple agreement allows. These terms are between you and Pilot Dev, not Apple: Apple has no responsibility for Maude or its support, isn't responsible for any claims about it, and has no warranty obligations beyond refunding the purchase price if the app fails to conform to an applicable warranty. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.

Acceptable use

Don't use Maude or the relay to:

  • break the law, or infringe anyone's rights, including intellectual property and privacy;
  • access or run agents on computers you aren't authorised to use;
  • create malware, attack or scan other systems, send spam, or mine cryptocurrency;
  • get around an agent provider's usage limits, policies or safety measures;
  • overload, probe or disrupt the relay or our servers, or try to reach another user's data;
  • copy, resell or reverse engineer Maude, except where the law allows it regardless of these terms.

We may rate-limit, suspend or block access to the relay for activity that breaks these rules or endangers the service or other users.

Licence and ownership

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the Maude app and to install and run the daemon on servers you control, under these terms. Maude, its code, design and name belong to Pilot Dev. Open-source components inside Maude are licensed under their own licences.

Your code, files, prompts and sessions are yours. We claim no rights over them. Rights in what an agent produces are governed by the agent provider's terms and the law. If you send us feedback or ideas, we may use them without owing you anything.

No affiliation

Maude is an independent app built by Pilot Dev. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI or Google. Claude and Claude Code are trademarks of Anthropic, PBC; Codex of OpenAI; Grok of xAI; Antigravity and Google Play of Google LLC; App Store of Apple Inc. We use these names only to say what Maude works with.

Changes and availability

We improve Maude continuously, so features can change. The relay and the update channel are provided on a reasonable-effort basis and can be interrupted for maintenance or by events outside our control. When the relay is down, you can still reach your servers over SSH. If we ever discontinue Maude, we'll give reasonable notice in the app and on this site, and the daemon on your servers will keep working over SSH as it is.

Warranties

We build Maude carefully and provide it as it is and as available. Apart from the guarantees the law gives you, which these terms don't limit, we don't promise that Maude will be uninterrupted or error-free, that it will work with every server, agent or version, or that an agent will do what you intended.

If you're a consumer in the EU, you benefit from the legal guarantee that digital content and services conform to the contract (in France, articles L.224-25-12 and following of the Consumer Code). If Maude doesn't conform, contact us and we'll put it right, or you may be entitled to a price reduction or refund.

Liability

Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, for gross negligence or wilful misconduct, or for anything else the law doesn't allow us to limit. If you're a consumer, your mandatory consumer rights stay in place.

Apart from that, and to the extent the law allows:

  • we're liable only for direct, foreseeable damage caused by our breach of these terms;
  • we're not liable for loss caused by actions an agent takes on your server, by approvals you give or permission modes you choose, by your servers or hosting provider, or by agent providers or other third-party services;
  • we're not liable for data loss that reasonable backups would have prevented;
  • for business users, we're not liable for lost profits, revenue or business opportunities, and our total liability is limited to what you paid for Maude in the 12 months before the claim.

Ending your use

You can stop using Maude at any time: cancel your subscription in the store, remove your devices and servers from the relay, uninstall the daemon and delete the app. We may suspend or end your access to the relay if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, after warning you where that's reasonable. Sections about responsibility, liability, ownership and governing law continue to apply after you stop.

Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by French law. If you're a consumer living in another country, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of that country, and you can bring a claim in the courts where you live. Otherwise, the courts of France have jurisdiction.

If something goes wrong, email us first; most problems can be fixed quickly. If you're a consumer and we can't resolve a dispute, you can refer it free of charge to a consumer mediator; contact us and we'll give you the mediator's details.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms when Maude or the law changes. We'll publish the new version here with a new effective date, and for significant changes we'll tell you in the app at least 30 days before they take effect. If you don't agree, you can stop using Maude and cancel your subscription before then. If you keep using Maude after the change takes effect, the new terms apply.
