Frequently asked questions

Do I need an Anthropic API key?
No. Maude drives the real Claude Code CLI on your own server, so it authenticates with the Claude Pro or Max subscription you already have. There is no API key to manage and no metered usage billed on top.
Where does my code actually run?
On your machine — a VPS you own, or a container on your own computer. Maude is a client: it connects over SSH and streams the output back to your phone. Your source code never passes through our servers.
Which servers work with Maude?
Any Linux machine you can reach over SSH. Hetzner, DigitalOcean, AWS, Fly.io, Scaleway, OVH, a Raspberry Pi on your desk — if it takes an SSH connection and can run Claude Code, it works. Both password and SSH key authentication are supported.
Can I use my own computer instead of a VPS?
Yes. Run Claude Code on your Mac or PC and point Maude at its SSH port — inside a Docker or OrbStack container if you'd rather keep it sandboxed. Add Tailscale and you can reach your desktop from anywhere. The local setup guide walks through it.
Are my SSH credentials safe?
Your server credentials are stored encrypted in the device keychain and are used only to open the SSH connection from your phone to your server. They are never uploaded to us.
What happens when I close the app?
The session keeps running on your server. Claude carries on working, and you get a push notification when the task finishes or when it needs your approval. Reopen the app to find the conversation exactly where it was.
Does it work on iPad and Android tablets?
Yes. Maude ships for iPhone, iPad and Android phones and tablets, with a wider two-pane layout on large screens.
Which slash commands are supported?
The ones that make sense on a touchscreen: /model, /effort, /usage, /compact, /clear, /mcp, /goal, /status, /recap, /rename, /cost and /help. Each one runs through a native panel rather than raw terminal output.
Is Maude made by Anthropic?
No. Maude is an independent app built by Pilot Dev. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Anthropic. Claude and Claude Code are products of Anthropic, and you need your own Claude subscription to use Maude.
How much does Maude cost?
$2.99 per week, or $59.99 per year — around $1.15 a week. That covers the Maude app; your Claude Pro or Max plan is billed separately by Anthropic. You can cancel anytime from your App Store or Google Play account settings.
