Anthropic
Claude Code on your phone, running on a server you own
Anthropic already gives you Claude Code in the Claude app. Maude is for when you want the session on your own machine, running around the clock, with approvals, files and git one tap away.
Quick answer
Anthropic's Claude app has a Code tab for cloud sessions and Remote Control, and it's a good choice for many people. Maude is an iOS and Android app that runs Claude Code on a Linux or macOS server you own. It installs a pinned, tested Claude Code over SSH, keeps sessions running after you close the app, sends permission prompts as Allow/Deny notifications, and signs in with your Claude Pro or Max plan.
If you just want to check on Claude Code from your phone, start with Anthropic. The Claude app for iOS and Android has a Code tab. From it you can start cloud sessions that run on Anthropic's infrastructure, or drive a session on your own computer through Remote Control. Our guide to Claude Code on iPhone and iPad compares every official route without a sales pitch.
Maude is for a narrower case. You want Claude Code on a server you own, such as a VPS or a box under your desk, so work carries on while your laptop is closed. You also want to drive it from a phone without keeping a terminal open in tmux. Maude deploys everything over SSH, keeps each session alive on the server, and gives you a native app around it.
What you get
- An inbox. Errors, sessions that are ready for review, and sessions that need you, across every server. Permission prompts can be answered right in the inbox without opening the chat.
- Push approvals. When Claude wants to run a command or edit a file, the notification carries Allow and Deny buttons. You can turn notification categories on or off.
- Every permission mode. Manual (Claude's
default), accept edits, plan, auto and bypass, switched from a chip in the composer. Bypass needs a non-root user on the server, because Claude Code refuses--dangerously-skip-permissionsas root. Maude has a button that creates that user for you. - Model and effort. Pick the model and effort level per session from the chips above the input.
- Slash commands that matter.
/compactwith a live progress indicator,/goal, and/clear. Questions Claude asks you (AskUserQuestion) and plan approvals show up as cards with buttons. - Files, git and a terminal. Each session has a file tree with changed files, a diff review you can step through hunk by hunk, commit and push, branches, and pull requests through
ghwhen it's installed on the server. A real terminal is one tab away. - Attachments and worktrees. Send photos and files from your phone, and start a session in its own git worktree so parallel tasks don't step on each other.
Several sessions can run at once, on one server or across several. They keep running when you lock the phone or close the app. The full setup is in our Claude Code VPS guide, and the case for leaving agents running is in running coding agents 24/7.
How it connects
You add a server by its address, by pasting an ssh … command, or by scanning a QR code printed by curl -fsSL https://maude.pilotdev.fr/setup | sh. Any Linux distribution or macOS machine works, x86-64 or ARM, with a password or a key. From there the app does the installing:
- It deploys a small daemon over SSH. The daemon then downloads its own pinned runtime.
- It installs Claude Code at a version we have tested, checksum-verified, and keeps both the daemon and Claude Code updated.
- The daemon dials out to Maude's relay, so the server needs no open inbound port. That means it also works behind NAT, on a home LAN or on a tailnet.
Traffic through the relay is end-to-end encrypted with a key per server, and the relay only sees ciphertext. SSH stays as the fallback and is used for deploys and recovery. Your code and transcripts stay on your server. For the security side of letting an agent run unattended, read running Claude Code with full permissions, safely.
Sign in with your Claude plan
Maude doesn't resell model access. You sign Claude Code in from the phone with the account you already pay for. The app runs claude auth login on the server, you authorise in the browser on your phone, and the login completes on the server. An Anthropic Console account or an API key also work.
Claude Code is included in Anthropic's Pro and Max plans, not the Free plan. At the time of writing Pro is $20 a month ($17 a month billed annually) and Max starts at $100. Check Anthropic's pricing page for current prices. Your Maude subscription covers the app only.
Claude Code on Android, iPhone and iPad
Maude is a native app for iPhone, iPad and Android, and the features are the same on all three. On a tablet you get a sidebar layout with the session list next to the chat. Android gets permission notifications on a high-importance channel, so an approval request doesn't end up silently in the shade. The Claude app is also on Android and iPad, so platform alone isn't a reason to pick one over the other. The deciding question is where you want Claude Code to run.
Maude vs Remote Control
Remote Control is Anthropic's own way to reach a session running on your machine. It has a server mode for many sessions at once and native push notifications. Here is how the two differ:
| Claude Code Remote Control | Maude | |
|---|---|---|
| Where Claude Code runs | Your machine; it has to stay on with the claude process running | Your server, kept running by Maude's daemon |
| Setup | Install Claude Code, run claude remote-control; use tmux or screen on a remote box | Add the server in the app; the daemon and Claude Code are deployed for you |
| Bypass permissions from the phone | No. The Claude app can't select Bypass permissions, and for Remote Control sessions it can't select Auto either | Yes, on a non-root user |
| Push notifications | Yes, including when actions are required | Yes, with Allow/Deny on the notification |
| Files, git, terminal | Through Claude | Built-in panels per session |
| Other agents | Claude Code only | Codex, OpenCode, Grok Build and Antigravity too, with handoff between them |
| Price | Included in Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise | Your Claude plan plus a Maude subscription |
If you're happy keeping a machine awake and a terminal open, Remote Control costs nothing extra and comes from Anthropic, so it's a sensible default. The full comparison is in Maude vs Claude Code Remote Control. If you'd rather not run a server at all, read Maude vs Claude Code on the web.
Hand a task to another agent
When a session is idle you can switch it to Codex, OpenCode, Grok Build or Antigravity. The new agent gets a brief with the plan, the files touched, the git state, the recent conversation and your last instruction. If you switch back, Claude Code resumes its own session. It's handy for a second opinion or when you hit a usage limit. We explain how it works in handing off tasks between coding agents.
